Video Editor and Creative Graphics Intern (In-Person or Remote)

Length: 6-9 months

Hours: 5-10 per week

Start Date: September 1, 2023 (preferred)

Smith Center is seeking a Video Editor Intern who can Organize and Time-stamp Footage, Video Edit, Output Media, and is Website Savvy.

Smith Center is based in Washington, D.C. but we are open to a fully remote intern.

Who We Are

Founded in 1996, Smith Center for Healing and the Arts (formerly Smith Farm) is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit health, education, and arts organization.

Our mission is to develop and promote healing practices that explore physical, emotional, and mental wellness and lead to life-affirming changes. We offer programs for the community and specialize in serving people with cancer and utilizing the arts in healing.

Our major focuses include:

Cancer Programs: We offer empowering retreats and programs for adults living with cancer and their caregivers including yoga and stress reduction, creative expression, nutrition classes, as well as lectures and support programs.

Patient Navigation: Through the Institute of Integrative Oncology Navigation, we offer innovative national and local patient navigation trainings and contribute to the developing dialogue about patient care nationwide.

Arts & Healing: Smith Center has become a leader in the nationwide movement to promote the use of the arts in healing. We do this through programs and exhibitions at the Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery and by developing and sharing a range of innovative programs and initiatives in the community and across the nation.

Smith Center was recognized by the 2022-2023 Catalogue for Philanthropy as one of the best small charities in the region.

What You’ll Do

The qualified candidate will work closely with the Program Director, Manager, and Lead Video Editor on a range of videos for events, programs, and retreats. The intern will be expected to organize recorded footage, adapt to an existing edit pipeline of videos, and post final exports. We are backlogged with our video projects, so we are looking for someone to hit the ground running and help get the team caught up. The intern may be asked to support in the creation of graphics for upcoming events and department communication. As Smith Center is a non-profit dedicated to supporting those with cancer it is essential that this intern understands the importance of our mission and approaches their work with kindness and compassion.

What You’ll Gain:

This internship provides exposure to video editing, a chance to build professional skills within an editing pipeline for the non-profit field, and mentorship. We are particularly interested in a student or recent grad who is new in their field and eager for an opportunity to learn to work professionally and build their resume.

Responsibilities:

Edit content in a way that is invisible to the audience.
Organize footage in a professional manor.
Trim footage segments and assemble sequences.
Input music, dialogues, SFX, graphics, and effects.
Create rough and final cuts.
Assist in creating dynamic graphic/video visual communications plans for programs, activities, and events.
Communicate daily with the Smith Center Team and Lead Video Editor.

Skills:

Proven experience as a video editor.
Solid understanding of sound mixing/editing.
1-2 years experience with editing software: Adobe Premiere Pro & After Effects.
Video editing reel or portfolio.
Experience with other Creative Cloud programs like Photoshop and Illustrator.
Experience with Canva creating graphics. (Preferred)
Understanding of easily readable composition for graphic design. (Preferred)
Clear communication and interpersonal skills.
Philanthropic mindset is a MAJOR PLUS.

Education:

Recent college graduate or current student. (Preferred)
If experienced enough, we are willing to consider someone with a High School degree.

Experience:

Adobe Premiere Pro & After Effects: 1-2 years (Preferred)
Adobe Creative Cloud: 1-2 years
Must have their own equipment (i.e., computer, hard-drive, and software)

Pay: Unpaid
